mykonos beaches

Mykonos features some of the most beautiful and well known beaches in Greece and the rest of Europe which have played a very important part of the island’s tourism development. The sand is semolina white and the waters are cold and as blue as can be. The beaches of Mykonos are one of its finest features and are justly considered among the most beautiful in the Aegean. Long stretches of sand and azure waters can win over even the most demanding visitors, while the more than thirty beaches the island has are sure to cater to every preference. Some beaches attract the young while others are preferred by older generations. Some pulsate to the beat of all-day parties while others rest in quiet tranquility.

You should be aware that on days with north winds, it is wise to visit the south coast Mykonos beaches, while on south wind days, opt for north coast beaches only on calm days where there are no waves. One thing to bear in mind is that in July and August the Cycladic Islands are swept by strong, even gale-force northerly winds, known as meltemia, which should be taken into consideration when selecting a beach. The southern beaches are better sheltered from the meltemia and are therefore preferable during that time. Overall, Mykonos has a type of beach for everyone. Whether you are looking for fun by the sea until sundown with a cocktail in your hand, or a quiet time reading a book on a calm, secluded beach, if you are the active type looking for sea sports, or if you are a nudist, Mykonos has a beach for you. And, of course, if you want to enjoy your lunch by the sea, all the beaches on the island feature luxury restaurants and picturesque taverns by the beach, serving Greek and Cycladic cuisine.

Perhaps the most important advantage of Mykonos, the one that distinguishes it among all the islands in the Aegean Sea, is its beaches. The most and the best beaches one can see in such a small island are found here. Especially in the southern part of the island, the picturesque bays with the magnificent sandy beaches succeed one another. These beaches can be reached by car or motorcycle since Mykonos’ road network radiates from Hora almost to every corner of the island. The southern beaches are also connected with each other with small boats during the summer, throughout the day. Visiting these beaches by boat can be very exciting.

Most beaches in Mykonos are organised and have facilities such as deck chairs and straw umbrellas, while water sports facilities are provided at many of these beaches as well. There are however those secluded beaches that haven’t been tainted by the advent of tourism.

The busiest beaches are more or less grouped together on the southwestern part of the island, and the most secluded are on the eastern part. The southwestern ones are also those that have the best access by road, frequent bus routes and access by sea with caiques (Paranga, Kalamopodi, Plindri, Agrari, Elia). Reaching the beaches on the east can only be achieved by driving over dirt roads, or by sea. In July and August the more popular beaches are full of tourists, but the waters stay warm enough to swim in even through September and October, when peak season is over and things have calmed down a bit.
