Lighthouse Armenistis
At approximately 5 km north of the capital, on the northwest Armenistis cape, one can see an 1891 lighthouse, situated on a 19 meter tower. Its old mechanism, decommissioned in 1983, is exhibited at the yard of the Aegean Maritime Museum. About 130 years ago, in 1887, the steam boat Volta owned by the British company Eastern Telegraph sank off the north coast of the island thus speeding up the lighthouse’s construction. |
